Rush and Effie Buxton
moved to Aberdeen from Hattiesburg,
Mississippi in 1947 and immediately went about
the task of establishing a jewelry and watch
repair business in downtown Aberdeen.
Needing to start small, the Buxtons leased a
9 ft by 30 ft. building at 133 East
Commerce Street (one-half of the present
Office Supply Store).
Setting up shop with a small inventory of
jewelry and watches for sale, they also
offered watch and jewelry repair. The
little business grew slowly but steadily,
and a decision to also get into the music
business was made the very next year when
folks began coming into the store wanting to
buy guitar
strings.
It began with a line of guitars and grew
from there.
Buxton Jewelry and Music now occupies two
adjacent buildings at 119 (jewelry) and 121
(music) East Commerce, just five doors west
of the original, smaller location.
The Buxtons' daughter, Bonnie, and her
husband Lane Conner joined the business in
January 1985, so the family tradition
continues.
Effie Buxton passed away in 2002.
